Once the required standard has been reached, JMDA gives students the opportunity to take dance examinations through International Performing Arts & Theatre (IPATH), Acrobatic Arts and the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). IPATH, Acrobatic Arts and the RAD are three of the world’s leading dance/acrodance examination boards, offering graded and vocational examinations.
The qualifications gained are recognised by the Qualification’s and Curriculum’s Authority (QCA) and are included in the National Qualification’s Framework. When students reach the required standard, they will have the option of taking dance examinations.
As students work their way up through the grades, their technique, artistry and discipline all develop and by the time they achieve their Grade 6 and above, they can claim UCAS points to put towards their university applications. JMDA realise that examinations are not for every student and therefore examinations are not compulsory. We are delighted by the inclusivity of IPATH who also offer Achievement Awards. Whether a student and their parent/guardian choose to take part in dance examinations or not will not effect a students place in class or the work they cover.
DANCE EXAMINATIONS
JMDA are delighted to have built up hugely successful Mini, Junior, Inter and Senior competition teams who have competed throughout NI, Ireland and the UK. Students are selected for the competition teams when a teacher deems them ready, and it should be noted that the commitment level required is high from both students and their families as well as the extra financial commitment involved. Many members of the teams also rehearse and compete in solo, duet and trio sections. Although we are always extremely happy when our students win and place at competitions, we are always hugely proud every time any students put themselves out there to compete, no matter how the result may fall. Nothing makes the team at JMDA happier than when a student is happy and proud of how they have performed.

SHOWCASES & PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

We have two shows per year, one in December and one in June. Students are under no obligation to take part - these decisions are at the parent/student discretion.
Once a year we also invite parents/guardians into the studio to watch students in their typical class. This could include examination syllabus display or whatever the class is currently working on.
JMDA showcases aim to be professional, slick and most importantly, fun, for all our students.
Our December showcase is a relaxed and more intimate performance. It’s a lovely, festive way to show how hard we have worked before we stop for the winter holidays.
Our end of year show is held in a professional theatre with high production values, a bigger audience, costumes, themes and props. This show is also professionally videoed and photographed, meaning you have the memory of your students performance forever. It’s such a lovely way to celebrate our academic year ending before we stop for our summer break.
We are delighted that our students have also had the opportunity to perform in numerous external productions including at Disneyland California, multiple corporate events for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, the world premiere of ‘Twisted: The Musical’, as well as feature in professional pantomimes and shows at The Braid Arts Centre and Theatre at the Mill.
